The Orange County Transportation Authority is seeking applications from qualified citizens to serve on its Taxpayer Oversight Committee (TOC).

The TOC is an 11-member committee whose existence is mandated by Measure M. It’s charge is to monitor the use of Measure M sales tax revenues, and ensure the use is compliant with the terms of Measure M, which was initially passed by the voters in 1990 and renewed with 70% of the vote in 2006. The landmark transportation sales tax, which makes Orange County a “self-help” county in terms of transportation funding, is expected to generate $13.2 billion through 2041.

Currently, applications are being accepted through May 2 for openings in the First, Third, Fourth and Fifth Supervisor Districts. The terms are for three-years. Interviews will be conducted between May 9 and 13.

Applications are available at octa.net/TOCrecruitment.

55 Freeway Expansion – Virtual Open Houses

OCTA is holding two virtual webinars where the public can learn more about the expansion of the 55 Freeway. The widening project will break ground this summer and will add a regular lane and a carpool lane in each direction between I-5 near Santa Ana and Tustin and I-405 near Irvine and Costa Mesa. It will also add auxiliary lanes to help drivers more smoothly enter and exit the freeway.

It’s expected the widening project will be completed in 2026, and is funded by Measure M sales tax revenue.

The virtual meetings will be held on Zoom:

Participants may also call into the meeting. Contact the project team at (888) 371-2555 for details.

The OC Independent is dedicated to providing factual, informative reporting on Orange County government, politics, education and quality of life issues such as homelessness and access to housing. We seek to illuminate aspects of issues, movements and trends that receive little or no attention from more established, mainstream outlets. Our editorial philosophy is grounded in the principles of the American Founding: limited government, federalism, the separation of powers and equality before the law as indispensable to securing our liberties. The opinions and stances articulated in OC Independent editorials flow from those principles, and are grounded in facts.
