This Saturday, May 28, the Irvine Ranch Conservancy is organizing a great educational opportunity to learn about and search for animal tracks and signs during a 5-mile hike through Weir Canyon.

The fauna of Weir Canyon include mule deer, bobcat, coyote, mountain lion, and raccoon.

The hike is from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and leaves from the Outdoor Education Center Weir Lot at the Weir Canyon Nature Preserve.

Prior to the start of the hike, participants will be given a briefing on animal tracks and scats.

Hikers should wear closed-toe shoes, and bring a hiking backpack with necessary supplies and 50-oz of water.

All hikers must sign a liability waiver (here). The minimum age to participate is 12. Minors can be added to their guardians waiver. No walk-up registration.

Failure to follow the aforementioned rules may result in being precluded from the hike.

Restrooms are available, but are not sanitized for each user.

The OC Independent is dedicated to providing factual, informative reporting on Orange County government, politics, education and quality of life issues such as homelessness and access to housing. We seek to illuminate aspects of issues, movements and trends that receive little or no attention from more established, mainstream outlets. Our editorial philosophy is grounded in the principles of the American Founding: limited government, federalism, the separation of powers and equality before the law as indispensable to securing our liberties. The opinions and stances articulated in OC Independent editorials flow from those principles, and are grounded in facts.
