Drivers traveling on I-405 through Costa Mesa this weekend are urged to use alternate routes because of a scheduled 15-hour closure of the freeway in both directions near the I-405/SR-73 connector.

The closure, between Fairview Road and the northbound I-405 off-ramp to South Coast Drive, is scheduled to begin as early as 8 p.m. Saturday, June 4, to 11 a.m. Sunday, June 5.

Drivers are asked to plan ahead, consider alternate routes and avoid the area during those hours, if possible. To sign up to receive updates about construction near the I-405/SR-73 connector, visit bit.ly/405-73Connector.

The freeway closure is necessary for crews to pour concrete for the new connector that will allow drivers to travel between SR-73 and the 405 Express Lanes that are being constructed as part of the I-405 Improvement Project.

Signs on the freeway will alert drivers of the closure and lead them toward detour routes. Information is also being shared with first responders, city officials, nearby businesses, the Waze navigation app and through social media to help spread the word.

In addition to the freeway closure, the Fairview Road bridge, northbound SR-73 off-ramp to Susan Street and southbound I-405/SR-73 on-ramp from Fairview Road will be closed.

The I-405 Improvement Project, now more than 75% complete, is adding one regular lane in each direction of I-405 between Euclid Street and I-605. In addition, a second lane will be added in each direction in the center of the freeway from SR-73 and I-605 that will combine with the existing carpool lanes to form the 405 Express Lanes.

This 16-mile segment of I-405 is one of the most heavily traveled stretches of highway in the nation. The improvements, which are scheduled to fully open to traffic next year, are critical to accommodate expected employment, population and housing growth throughout the region.
