Assemblyman Tri Ta has introduced Assembly Bill 504, aimed at aligning beauty industry licensing standards and ensuring that manicurists receive equal treatment under California employment law.

“Other license types issued by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology allow licensees to be classified as independent contractors,” said Assemblyman Ta. “When exemptions were being negotiated, manicurists—most of whom are Vietnamese women—were singled out for disparate treatment. This bill seeks to correct that injustice and provide equality under California law.” concluded Ta.

A recent report by the UCLA Labor Center indicates that 82% of nail salon workers were born in Vietnam and 85% are female.

The bill is currently awaiting referral to a policy committee.

Who is OC Independent?

The OC Independent is dedicated to providing factual, informative reporting on Orange County government, politics, education and quality of life issues such as homelessness and access to housing. We seek to illuminate aspects of issues, movements and trends that receive little or no attention from more established, mainstream outlets. Our editorial philosophy is grounded in the principles of the American Founding: limited government, federalism, the separation of powers and equality before the law as indispensable to securing our liberties. The opinions and stances articulated in OC Independent editorials flow from those principles, and are grounded in facts.
