Garden Grove Unified School District has received nearly $2 million from the state’s Literacy Coaches and Reading Specialists Grant Program to expand literacy support at four additional elementary schools.
The new funding will provide dedicated school-based literacy coaches through the 2028-29 school year at Eisenhower, Newhope, Russell, and Simmons elementary schools.
This is the second round of funding the district has received from the program. In 2023-24, Garden Grove Unified was awarded $1.9 million to fund literacy coaches through 2027-28 at Clinton, Heritage, Hazard, and Rosita elementary schools, along with the district’s Special Education Center at Mark Twain.
The grant funds site-based coaches who provide targeted reading intervention for students and ongoing coaching for teachers. Their work includes in-class support, small-group instruction, and after-school interventions, with a focus on strengthening early literacy and foundational reading skills.
Board of Education President Lan Nguyen said the program helps students build the skills needed for long-term academic success.
Garden Grove Unified officials said the district remains focused on closing achievement gaps and ensuring students reach grade-level reading proficiency.
