A vigorous 9 to 12 mile early morning hike from in the Irvine Ranch Open Space is scheduled for Wednesday, October 4. The hike begins at 7:00 a.m. from the Outdoor Education Center (Weir Lot) in Irvine Regional Park, into Santiago Oaks and crossing into the Weir Canyon Nature Preserve along the scenic overlook trail – then dropping into lower Weir Canyon before hiking back to Irvine Regional Park.

Hikers will encounter several steep climbs and descents on a hike that is rated a 4 on the 1-through-5 Difficulty Ratings. Participants must be at least 18 years old, have signed an IRC Liability Waiver and have registered in advance – no walk-ins are allowed.

Given the strenuous character of the 5-hour hike, participants must come prepared with a daypack, 100 oz. (3 quarts) of water, trail snacks, closed-toe hiking shoes, sunscreen, first aid, and any other supplies needed to keep you safe on the trail. Each participant must carry his or her own pack and water and be comfortable hiking at an average moving pace of 3 mph. Under-prepared participants may be denied access to this program.

Who is OC Independent?

The OC Independent is dedicated to providing factual, informative reporting on Orange County government, politics, education and quality of life issues such as homelessness and access to housing. We seek to illuminate aspects of issues, movements and trends that receive little or no attention from more established, mainstream outlets. Our editorial philosophy is grounded in the principles of the American Founding: limited government, federalism, the separation of powers and equality before the law as indispensable to securing our liberties. The opinions and stances articulated in OC Independent editorials flow from those principles, and are grounded in facts.
